TWAS September 21

Hello Everyone,

It was great that so many people were able to fit "meet the teacher" into their busy schedules.  I know that it was very busy and there wasn't a lot of time to connect individually, so please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like a more in-depth conversation about your child's learning. I did email the presentation and a copy of our weekly schedule; if you didn't receive it please let me know so that I can re-send.

It looks like Wednesday's weather might just be okay for our family picnic!  We are planning to leave the school at 11:15 and the plan is to be back just prior to the end of lunch (12:00 ish). Please bring available siblings :)

Next Friday is our Terry Fox run and the office will be collecting 'Toonies for Terry' all week. The children will have an opportunity to run their toonies to the office each morning after attendance.

We should be back on track with our TWAS letter writing next Friday but here are some of the main themes from this week's learning:

Math:

  • Increasing/Decreasing patterns
    • making sound patterns with our bodies, voices and instruments
      • individually and in groups.  I have shared videos of your child's sound pattern on his or her drive.  It is in the "shared with me section".  They are GREAT!!
      •  listening, talking about and enjoying sound patterns in music.
    • 'how many ways' number representation
  • Make 10 math games
    • memory (instead of finding pairs the children paired make 10 equations)
    • barn/house with dice and or cards
    • "Can you guess my number"
  • Calendar
    • How do we measure our year? What are the months.  What is special about September?
  • Math Art
    •  math patterns
  • Math problems
    • if time allows, help your little one to draw out his/her thinking and then answer the following pattern math problem
      • On Monday Mrs. McArthur ate 2 cookies, on Tuesday Mrs. McArthur ate 4 cookies and on Wednesday Mrs. McArthur ate 6 cookies.  If Mrs. McArthur continues with this pattern of cookie eating, how many cookies will she eat on Friday?
Language Arts
  • generosity, story, reflection and recognition.
  • sentence building (adding details, description and conventions)
  • novel, Gooney Bird Greene, by Lois Lowry

Science:  Hot and Cold
  • Thermometers
    • how they work
    • how to read them
