TWAS (This Week At School) September 7

Hello Everyone,

I can't believe it is Friday; what an incredibly fast, but incredibly great, week!  The children are settling in to our routines really well.  In addition to reviewing/learning safety, schedules, routines and expectations we have been really focusing on creating a belonging space where everyone feels cared for and important.  This group is making these lessons very easy :)

All of the children wrote TWAS letters to an adult or adults in their lives and these letters went home in the communication folders today.  Consent forms also went home; if you didn't get them please let me know and I'll make sure to forward them to you. 

I'd like to send out a huge thank you to parent council for providing us with a delicious and very thoughtful treat Thursday morning.  We really enjoyed the thoughtful gesture.  

Just a reminder that this upcoming Friday the 14th is Dinosaur Archaeology.  It is an in-school program that will run from 8:30am until approximately 11:45am.  They are asking for 4-5 volunteers per class, so anyone with clearance and time would be a welcomed addition to the day!

Math

  • patterns
    • attributes, core/pattern rules
  • we started some make 10 math toss with our classroom ball
  • Barn or House (an addition math game that can be played with dice or cards)
    • we are brainstorming favourite math games to play with our Friday morning math buddies — all suggestions welcomed.
  • Upcoming: building patterns; increasing and decreasing patterns; elements; sound patterns; environmental patterns
A MATH PROBLEM TO DO TOGETHER: If you have time, have your child draw out this math problem to find the answer (challenge them to see how many ways they can draw it out: tally marks, pictures, symbols)
It is time for our class to come inside for recess (we have 20 students).  There are only 18 children standing in line.  How many students are we missing? 

Language Arts
  • making predictions and connections to stories. 
  • brainstorming and organizing ideas.
  • responding to either of the two writing prompts
    • a favourite memory
    • something my teacher should know about me
  • beginning our word wall 
    • mind reader word wall game

  • our first 'no excuse words"

Art
  • colour wheel review
  • using only the primary colours to creating individual colour wheels, with acrylic paints.

Buddies
  • teaching grade 1's how to play Barn/House math games
Science
  • this upcoming week we will begin our temperature science unit.

Hello Everyone, I hope you've all had a great week; I honestly can't believe it is Friday.  It's only the end of September and already we need more minutes in our days! We had a fantastic Terry Fox run; the weather was perfect and it was great to have some families and Dr. George students out there cheering us on! Thanks also to those that were able to make it out to the family picnic; it was such a lovely way to spend a lunch hour. For those that weren't able, we'll try for another in the spring. TWAS May 3

Hi Everyone, I hope you've all had a great week! Wow — we had some fantastic Arctic Animal and Passion Project presentations this week!  Way to go students.  We're really looking forward to some more next week! We've been having fun with our learning here in Cranston School but really really want the weather to start cooperating so that we can be having even more fun with our learning outside of the school!! Our math and science units (measurement and critters) really lend themselves to outdoor exploration so here's hoping for some spring sun and warmth next week : ) This week in measurement we worked with different units of measurement, and discussed standard units of measurement.  With our little buddies, we used beanbags to mark our long jumps in the hub and link, and then figured out how to use 1 block, 1 ruler or 1 math book to measure our jump distances.  Likewise we learned to compare the length of an item when it is straight or bent (pipe-cleaners, ak...

TWAS April 26

Hello Everyone, I hope you have all had an excellent week and are able to enjoy your families over the weekend : ) We've had a very busy week getting a good start on lots of new units: measurement in math; small crawling and flying animals in science; Nova Scotia in Social studies. Today was also Club Friday and an assembly.   It can be a little scary venturing off to a new 'club' learning space. We've talked about trying out things we might not normally try and giving it our best for three sessions.  There was a lot of fun 'club sharing' during circle at the end of the day and new learning to spread around.  It was a fun day. We're working on time measurement (calendar) and ventured outside to measure our heights with chalk lines and string.  We then measured those strings inside (it was freezing) with popsicle sticks; ask your little one how many popsicle sticks high he or she is.
