TWAS November 16th

Hi Everyone,

Wow — the Cranston lights look so beautiful on these dark snowy mornings! What a lovely way to start each day.

I hope that those of you who were able to make it to math night enjoyed the evening and found some interesting math ideas to take home!

Checkers is a game that we've been starting to work with in our class.  The children have begun to create their own checker boards and have asked me to put a template on the blog so that they can make one for home too, so I've attached it below. It may be hard to copy from the blog though, so here is a downloadable link as well:  https://www.studenthandouts.com/study-games/printable-games/checkerboard-game-board-printable-sheet-template.htm

They can also practice playing online (great for teaching them the rules).  I just googled "play checkers on line" for kids, and opted to play against the computer.  They loved it!

Also in math this week, we've been working on math design, Canadian Coins/values, doubles plus 2 and doubles plus 2 problems and drama. We love acting out math problems so, if you have time over the weekend, feel free to help your children write a problem that we can act out in class.  Here's one that a student in our room created this week (we were learning about the Alberta Provincial bird, Great Horned Owl) .

A Great Horned owl was flying around and he got very very hungry.  He spotted two mice and ate them. Then he spotted two gophers and ate them.  Then spotted 2 snakes and ate them too.  Then he got a tummy ache.  How many critters did he eat altogether?

In Language Arts the children are continuing with self exploration writing, and we are also beginning to work on descriptive writing.  We will also be starting "All About Me" mobiles so I have asked the children to bring in a metal hanger from home if they have one; they are very excited and some have already started to ask about and bring in hangers  (thank you so much for the extra on sent in).

This week in art, the children learned some basic sketching techniques and WOW the sketches are so cool.  Here's the link for the sketching lessons if you're interested in trying out some of the techniques or if your little one wants to practice (I promised them I'd put the links on the blog lol):

Sketching:  Part 1: outlines, edges and shading (8min, 21 sec)

Part 2: Draw a watering can using shape

Enjoy the pictures and have a wonderful weekend – see you on Monday 73 :)
