TWAS March 15

Hello Everyone,

It feels like spring might just be on its way . . . I can't wait to start moving more of our lesson time outside!

It was a great week.  We can't thank the swimming volunteers enough! I also really want to thank each and every family; the students were so incredibly independent, polite, respectful and enthusiastic.  Thank you so much for all that you did to set these little ones up for a successful swimming week.  It was so much fun and I think it was a really valuable experience!!

On top of our busy swimming schedule, here is a summary of the rest of our learning:

Math:  Geometry, 2 digit regrouping and subtraction.
This eye opener math problem was created by one of our students; it's a good one so I thought I'd share (thank you E.P.)
If each student in our class has three gold coins for his/her leprechaun trap, then how many coins do the students have all together?
Science:  Boats and buoyancy
  • Make that penny float!
  • Planning, observations and notes.
Social Studies:
  • transportation in Nunavut
    • modern and traditional
Art:
  • Leprechaun traps

Language Arts:
  • Story writing
    • what causes the problem?
      • planning and design
    • Title pages in our new writing books, for each student's first story.
    • Daily 5
  • Whole class writing; a continuation of The Story of Dell (see last week's blog for the introduction)
. . . One Tuesday Morning Dell woke up and put on her favourite dress. She walked to school just like any other day.  She enjoyed watching the cool fairy lights that guided her morning walk.  On the way to school the lights were red.  When she walked home the lights were purple.  Each month the walking lights changed colour. This was the first day that they were red so she knew it was a brand-new month.
She walked into class excited to share her new-month knowledge when suddenly her teacher called out to the class:
“Wonderful news everyone!!! We are going swimming!!!!”
Dell was excited until she started to shiver with fear. She started to visualize a huge massive diving board that she had seen on the nocturnal Planet Zorb internet. She started to think terrible thoughts like “I’m scared; I’m going to sink; I’m going to get hurt; I’m going to fall in and will never ever get out!!!”

Tune in next week to see how Dell handles this BIG problem!

Please don't hesitate to email with comments or for further clarification.
I hope that everyone has a spectacular weekend!

See you on Monday 73!
