TWAS March 22

Hello Everyone,

Happy Spring Break!

Thank you so much for getting all of the field trip forms returned so quickly!

I hope all of you and your families are able to enjoy some wonderful moments together over the next week; the children have been such creative and hard workers.  I am sure they are very ready for a little break time!

We have fun experiences planned for the final chapter of grade 2.  In addition to Leighton, we have an art specialist coming to our class to teach us a special technique to create beautiful Acadian themed pieces.  We also hope to do a little research in the beautiful Fish Creek landscape, and much of our math measurement unit outside.

I'll leave you with a quick summary and upcoming info about our studies and wish you all a wonderful week!

Math:

  • Math problems/regrouping addition, and introducing regrouping subtraction.  Geometry review (cylinders/sphere/cube/cone/pyramid/circle/square/rectangle/triangle).

  • A math problem from this week:

Ben’s parents buy new candles to put on his birthday cake every year. Each year, they put the same number of candles on his cake as the age he is turning.

When Ben turns 11, how many candles in total will they have used on his birthday cakes since he was born?
  • After the break we will continue with addition/subtraction 2-digit with regrouping, some geometry review and will begin measurement.

Language Arts:
  • Narrative writing and storytelling.  Developing interesting themes and central ideas in story.  We began work in our good copy story writing/poetry books.
  • Daily 5 work
    • general reading practice
    • sentence structure
    • reflective writing
    • passion projects
    • non-fiction reading
  • After the break we will continue with our narrative writing and story telling unit and then will be turning our stories into fun puppet theatre shows which we hope to display in early May; then we will move on to poetry.
Science:
  • Boats and buoyancy
    • adding salt to increase buoyancy
  • When we return from the break we will be completing our boats and buoyancy unit by studying different types of boats and then creating and testing our own boats.  We will then move on to begin an inquiry unit on small crawling and flying animals.
Social Studies
  • Inuit Games
  • Arctic Animals
  • When we return from break we will finish our arctic community study with an arctic animal inquiry project and then will move on to begin our study on an Acadian community.
See you in April!

Mrs. McArthur
