TWAS May 16

Hello Everyone,

I can't believe that we are at the May long weekend! As we're moving into our last units, we'll soon be starting to think about some fun review and tying it all together with some final projects.  It's the time of year where everyone is full of energy, ready to move and enjoying outside learning whenever possible.  Fortunately, up until the today, the weather has been more cooperative and we've been able to get outside a lot more. It's a great time of year for learning!

Thank you so much volunteers, who were able to come in and help us with our beautiful Artfelting projects. It was wonderful having you with us for the morning, and the art is beautiful. As always we couldn't have done it without you!

We enjoyed our first session of inline skating on Monday.  Everyone was incredibly independent and brave!  I was very proud of all of the students.  Our next three sessions are in the last week of the month: May 27, 29 and 30th. While inline continues in the gym, we have been outside working on core strength, cardio, a special type of soccer that is perfect for school (soft soccer) and loving the strategy game of Capture the Chicken (Capture the Flag).

As we continue to work on our theatre boxes, we've also begun our poetry unit with the question "How is Poetry?" We are learning how poetry enables us to share or enter into another's experience.  We have started our exploration through our senses, and will continue with sense experience and sense reflection next week.  It is a lot of fun; the children really enjoy learning about poetry.  They also like trying to figure out what it is poets are talking about and the meaning behind metaphors, such as the following:

  • Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering.  There is a crack in everything. That is how the light gets in. (Leonard Cohen)

If you have a favorite poem/song/stanza/line please share and see how your little poem 'detective' does. Can s/he figure out the meaning/experience being shared?

In perfect timing for our small crawling and flying animal unit, our caterpillar babies arrived today!  Most of our documentations showed them to be about the size of a pencil tip, or pinkie finger nail and the students are excited to see how they will have changed over the weekend, when we return on Tuesday.  We have also started our bee study, and will be looking at ants and worms next week as well.

During our Nova Scotia learning exploration, we discovered a third industry: coal mining.  The children were very happy to discover that doctors did not think that it was a good idea for children to continue to work in the coal mines, those many years ago. We've also discovered that French and British settlers had a few things to work out . . .
Most fun though was that we were able to turn our lighthouse investigations into beautiful art, with our wonderful Artful experience (enjoy the picture below).
We will be learning about the Acadian history and traditions over the next couple of weeks, before we return to the prairies, looking at the Saskatoon landforms, industry, culture and traditions.

This week in math we were able to have some fun weighing classroom objects, working on our mental math skills with bean bag drill tosses, and made a fascinating discovery about odd and even.  We've started predicting whether the sums of 2 and even 3 digit numbers will be odd or even.  Next week, in addition to learning about time measurement, we will also be working with data analysis.

Thanks for a great week everyone; your children are so much fun.   We laugh so much and our days fly by. Sometimes it's hard to remember how much we're learning; I know the children are ready for a break so I hope you all enjoy the weekend, and I'll look forward to jumping back into it all on Tuesday!
