TWAS November 9th

Hello Everyone,

I hope you've all had a good week.  I know that some of you were able to make it out to our beautiful Remembrance Day Ceremony today and I'm sure that you enjoyed it so much.  It is always so moving, and the children were so respectful.
I was very proud of our two wreath bearers and all the students in 73 who came together to create such a beautiful wreath.  We also made some poppy art for the assembly (see picture below) and another piece that most of the children chose to bring home today. We discussed the two minutes of silence remembrance that occurs on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (this Sunday) and the children were extremely respectful during Cranston's observation this morning.
In addition to all of that poppy art, we engaged in a lot of peace study, reflection and discussion.  The children offered some extremely insightful perspectives as to what peace means to them.  We also began some descriptive writing this week.  We are entering into this form of writing with an exercise called See Think Wonders.  If you have time they can create an image and teach you how to write a See Think Wonder response. Additionally, TWAS letters went home today.  Thank you also to everyone who was able to complete the "story of your name" sheets with your children. They have been LOVING hearing the stories of everyone's names during group shares and we will continue our work with this next week.
We had a wonderful first week with Ms. Patton and our math skills work. This week's focus was doubles +1.  We used power of ten cards, manipulatives and life sized number lines to move through and identify doubles + 1.  We also learned how to create accurate number lines, and why it is so important that the numbers are evenly spaced (we even got to talk a little bit about fractions and decimals).  Next week it is doubles + 1 math problems; it's also math night on the 15th.

Here is one of the math problems we worked on this week:

If each table group in our class made four poppies, how many poppies would our class make?
(These are our table groups:  caterpillars, earthworms, dragonflies, beetles & ants).
An extension:  If we need 60 poppies for our wreath then how many poppies would each table group have to make?
Our magnet and Alberta inquiries continue in socials and science and our health focus is "what makes brains healthy."

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend;  see you Monday 73 :)

Mrs. McArthur
